Ice Dam Sources and Solutions

Ice dams are as predictable as the seasons during our cold, snowy Midwestern Winters. Homeowners are often oblivious to the damage that these large waves of ice can do until water starts intruding into the home. Although some ice damming is not unusual, excessive ice damming needs to be addressed before significant damage can occur. The solution to this problem requires an understanding of the underlying causes.

Attic Ventilation Strategies - Are Attic Fans a Good Idea ?

Every homeowner has been told at some point or another about how important ventilation is to your attic, especially by roofing companies and those in the business of selling attic fans. A well ventilated attic helps to avoid problems with moisture and heat buildup. Be it winter or summer, the goal is to keep the ventilated attic as close as possible to the outside temperature.

In the summer time a well ventilated attic helps to keep the attic cooler. On the other hand, a poorly ventilated attic can get extremely hot and impact the comfort of adjacent spaces and result in higher energy bills. Temperatures can soar to over 130 degrees and lessen the life of the roofing above it.

A Homeowner's Guide to Window Energy Efficiency

If you have spent any amount of gathering information on windows you have no doubt heard many different terms related to the performance characteristics of new windows. Things like double and triple pane, argon and krypton gas, and low E coatings are product options that are most often associated with a window's thermal performance. You might have also wondered which one of these are most important and how should a consumer evaluate the performance differences between 2 different windows ? Will 2 different double pane windows with argon gas always provide the same level of energy efficiency and comfort? The simple answer is not necessarily and that is one of the problems that homeowners face. How are they supposed to "test out" something before it gets purchased and installed in their home? Luckily there is a 3rd party organization that does a lot of that work for us and they are called the National Fenestration Rating Council or the NFRC for short.

Energy Efficient Landscaping for Cooling Down.

On cold winter days, a ray of sun streaming into your house can be most welcome - a free source of heat. But what about in the summer, when those rays of sun and other, less-evident solar heat, seep into our already too-hot houses and become a costly nuisance? Well, what happens is that you lose money. But using landscaping (namely by planting trees) to shade your home can be a great way to lower energy costs.

Think You Need New Windows? Not So Fast.

It speaks to the marketing savvy of window manufacturers and installers that, when faced with drafty rooms or high energy bills, most homeowners typically think that the best solution would be new replacement windows. While energy efficient replacement windows will likely lead to improved comfort and lower utility bills, the truth is that there are many far more cost effective solutions to improve your home’s comfort and energy efficiency.
